“Excellence is not an act, but a habit.” — Aristotle

About Ahmed

Position: 3rd year PhD student
Education: PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Tennessee Health Science Center, USA (ongoing)
MSc. in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Kafrelsheikh University, Egypt.
Background:
I am a PhD student in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), working in the Roy Lab under the mentorship of Dr. Sudeshna Roy. My research focuses on medicinal chemistry and drug discovery, with an emphasis on the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of small molecules for the treatment of infectious diseases. My current work includes developing new fluoroquinolone analogs against Mycobacterium abscessus and exploring novel chemical strategies for the synthesis of fluorinated carboxylic acids. I am particularly interested in applying organic chemistry, molecular design, and structure–activity relationship studies to address challenging problems in drug discovery.

“Fear not, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” — Luke 12:32

About Khyla

Position: 1st Year PhD Student
Education: Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from Louisiana State University
Background:
Though my journey has been rather unconventional, all roads have led me to UTHSC and have been guided by my undying love for science and the elucidation of the unknown. I began my career in investment banking, where I honed my analytical skills and learned to thrive under pressure, but my curiosity surrounding the intricate systems and inner workings of science always drew me to want more than deal flow and contractual reviews. Following that pull, I left finance to pursue a PhD, and today my research focuses on molecular synthesis. I bring to the lab both a scientist’s curiosity and the rigor and macro perspective I gained in finance, driven by the same desire to understand complex systems and uncover what lies beneath the surface.
